The Floating Ribbon: Redefining Office Space with Collaborative Design

A Unique Concept for HQ Management Hub by MAIA - MAI Atelier Limited

Located by the waterfront in a warehouse building, the design of The Floating Ribbon responds to the need for five teams to co-share an industrial space under one grand ceiling. This unique concept reflects the port business and ocean culture, creating a collaborative open plan that fosters daily interaction and creativity.

The Floating Ribbon is not your typical office space. Instead of traditional departmental organization, this design embraces a collaborative approach, unifying multiple communal lounges into one continuous organic space. This innovative layout encourages teammates to share ideas and fosters collaboration, creating a vibrant and dynamic work environment.

Designed by MAIA - MAI Atelier Limited, The Floating Ribbon serves as the headquarters for a global port management hub operating in five continents. The design brings together five teams in a warehouse linear space, strategically linked by the Floating Ribbon. Acting as a spatial definition, this unique feature unifies all communal spaces and fosters a sense of connection among team members.

The Floating Ribbon also plays a crucial role in the post-COVID pandemic era. As the world rebuilds and adapts to new norms, the strong identity of the communal space becomes pivotal in fostering relationships among teammates. It provides a safe and inspiring environment for collaboration, allowing for the exchange of ideas and the cultivation of a strong corporate culture.

Technologically, the realization of The Floating Ribbon involves the use of spray-painted colors to define the public and work zones. The open ceiling is painted navy blue for the continuous communal spaces and dark grey for the generic work area, enhancing the overall identity of the design. The office furniture, with its bold and softened geometry, is seamlessly integrated along the central row of columns. This integration allows each piece of furniture to float in its designated space, responding to the Floating Ribbon above and creating a harmonious and functional work environment.

The Floating Ribbon is not just a design concept; it is a response to the changing needs of office spaces in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. It provides a solution for creating safer indoor spaces that promote well-being, socialization, and work-life balance. By combining contemporary commercial aesthetics with the industrial mood of terminal ports, this design reflects the culture of the international global company it houses.

The project, which started in September 2021 and was completed in March 2022, is a testament to the creativity and ingenuity of the design team at MAIA - MAI Atelier Limited. The Floating Ribbon has been recognized for its excellence and innovation, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2023. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that incorporate best practices in art, science, design, and technology, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
